Backlog Boys part 1

Backlog Boys is a brand new channel on YouTube featuring my friend Austin Coldin from the band Do A Barrel Roll and his couch-sitting companion Vaughn. They got a lotta old games, so they’re gonna play em!

Austin has me tagged to do some work for his band in the future, but before all that gets underway, he wanted some art that was going to work both as a logo and for the channel and various social media platforms. Believe it or not, the couch and the bookshelves FULL of games do indeed exist and are the backdrop for each episode they record!

Line art was done as always on bristol board with brush and ink. Come back Thursday for the final colored version, and Saturday for some bonus material!

And of course, check out the show!

Happy Couple’s Colors

Here’s the full colored version of the invitation art for Chonsuta and my wedding in February. She chose to wear a traditional Thai formal dress in brilliant pink and gold, it was quite stunning in-person! It was hard to capture the brilliance of the colors in print, and especially with the short amount of time I had to pull this together, but she was very happy with the results, so I’m happy!

Come back next week for some fun YouTube channel art I did recently!

Life Changes

Hey everyone, sorry for the very long absence. Life decided it was time to shake things up and back on February 20th I married my wonderful girlfriend Chonsuta and spent the last month and a half helping her finish her time in Boston and get settled in here in Vermont! I’m lucky to have such a supportive wife and will be getting back to art and comics/Citadel very very soon!

Through the whole process I was drawing and working on an illustration gig, which I’ll share next week. For now, enjoy the line art for the image which adorned the wedding invitation Chon and I sent out! The full color piece will be posted on Thursday!

Cheers!

Merry Christmas 2015

As I’m sure you know, since about 2010 I’ve done an annual holiday card! I have usually themed them around my characters in Citadel, but this year due to lots of things happening in life contributing to a time-crunch, I was unable to come up with a really detailed illustration. I chose to go for a more quick sketchy style with marker color instead of digital. The results are actually returning some very positive thoughts from my fellow cartoonists and friends! I might explore doing a few smaller stories in this style as comics in the future!

One of the big changes this year was beginning a relationship with Chonsuta aka Chon, my beautiful girlfriend! She’s from Thailand and has opened my eyes to many strange and wondrous things in the world, and I hope to use that knowledge to better myself, my art and Citadel. She had been asking for a long time now when I was going to draw the two of us together, and as part of her Christmas present, I did! I hope she, and you all enjoy it, and it brings some warmth and happiness into your soul this holiday season!

Pixel Noir

Hey everyone! Hope you all had a fun and safe halloween! Today I have a special piece of art to share with you!

Pixel Noir was recently successfully funded on Kickstarter, just like Beyond Mode 7 was last year! Len, Kunal, Tim, Max and the rest of the amazing SWD Tech crew have crafted an amazing paranormal noir thriller RPG that’s unique and fun and full of amazing art, music and stories!

Near the end of the campaign, Kunal called out to his artists friends to create some fan art for the forthcoming title, and I was all about contributing! I sort of took elements from the game, Max’s original designs for the main character and SWD Tech’s own logo to come up with my piece above! Kunal plans to feature it in an upcoming Kickstarter update, so I’ll definitely let people know on social media when it’s up and continue to help spread the word about this game as it nears completion!

The Original Art and a print may eventually go up for sale in my store, pending approval from SWD Tech!

Enjoy!

Vermont Comic Con Report

Vermont for the second year unleashed its nerdy side as geeks of all walks gathered this past weekend in Burlington for the second annual Vermont Comic Con! It was a huge success from the sounds of the interview that aired today with the show organizers on Vermont Public Radio’s “Vermont Edition” and I was very glad to be a part of it! VTCC was my second convention in the state, but this was my first year attending this show as it conflicted with a different show last year. Let’s get to the usual wrap-up!

I did pretty well at this show considering my placement was right at the entry way to the main level. Tables by the door are typically not the best place to be, as you are the first thing people see, but also the first forgotten as the crowds move down the line and spend their money elsewhere. I didn’t break perfeclty even, but made enough to justify the trip. Seeing/meeting friends new and old was also super fun, I’ll highlight as many of them as I can in a later section.

My table-mates this go-round were writer and all-around cool guy Mike Luouma, who you MAY have heard frequently on the radio on Burlington’s The Point 104.7 FM! and recent, fellow Center for Cartoon Studies ink-slinger Aaron Shrewsbury! If you read the local arts paper 7 Days you’ve seen Aaron’s design work as he’s on staff with them! He does amazing art-object comics with some of the most unique packaging and presentations I’ve seen yet! Mike delves into classic sci-fi adventures with a variety of amazing artists.

I attended Vermont Comic Con in part because of the hard work of Gregory Giordano. He has organized a collective on Facebook called the Vermont Comic Creators and worked with the convention to provide exclusive tables to the group at a discounted rate. Greg is an old pro and a bit of a local comics legend, his work is intense, dark and so energetic! I’m glad he helped put it all together for us! Thanks Greg!

Other creators involved in the group that were there: Blair Shedd of Dr. Who fame (The Dr. Who Panel reached capacity this year, amazing!) Ben Cohen, Michael Waggoner, Brandon Borrows, Matt Forsyth and many others! The group plans on doing many other public events together in the future so keep an eye out for us!

Kids Con made an appearance at VT Comic Con, run by Emily Drouin of Eplis Comics, as you can see in the banner above, it’s a super cool effort to promote arts education to children through comics and other sequential art! Apparently the Sketch Showdown panel she was participating in was also a huge success!

I hadn’t seen Amanda Dufrense in quite some time but she was busy as ever at VTCC! Her amazing, hyper-detailed ball-point pen style is very popular at every show she goes to and in the brief moment we had to catch up, she was busily working on a commission. If you want some unique FRAMED original comic art to go on your wall, find her at the myriad of shows she does every year!

I was happy to be able to attend a Comic Convention in my own state for once. Yes I still had to travel a bit and get a hostel bed overnight, but as convention costs go, this one was easy to budget for. So many talented people came out for this one and the crowds showed up to match. I’m excited for next year’s show, this feels like something that can sustain very easily over the long haul, and I’m glad to be a part of it!

J is for Justice Full Color

Here’s the full color image of a piece done for the Law office of Jack Kaunders!

This went through many different coloring ideas before we settled on this more realistically colored, light-to-dark idea.
