MeCAF 2015 Report

Another spring has arrived here in New England and that means comics shows are back! This is my 6th year doing the Maine Comics Arts Festival. I’ve been lucky enough to table at every single show since it started way back in 2008. This show has grown, evolved and moved venues over that run, but continues to always be a bed-rock show for me. I almost always do well at MeCAF, even in a down year. This year was no exception.

Beyond Mode 7 was very well received at the show, despite the fact I had to borrow some copies to sell from my co-editor Jesse DuRona. We’ve had high hopes for the Anthology from day 1 and seeing all our copies go at MeCAF really helped solidify those feelings. If you were there and didn’t get a chance to check it out of pick yourself up a copy, it’s always available at my store page!

Normally I’d have a bunch of photos from the show floor, but this year I was busy enough that I didn’t get to take any! This is a bit of a transition year for RKDIA Comics as well, as Jesse and I split to independent tables after co-tabling for many years, and my presentation is going to evolve in the coming season as I try to re-evaluate what it is that I want to share at comic conventions, and what the public is looking for from me.

To that effect, I did notice sketch cards were way down this year for me, and a few other artists I talked too on the floor. Perhaps it was placement (Jesse, who was near the entrance, did a ton of them) or perhaps it was just me not pushing them as hard. Either way, it’s something I’m going to take into account on-the-whole when it comes to cons and trade shows…almost everyone does them now.

I saw so many familiar faces but sadly did not get around to say hello very much. Check out the Guests List to see who was there and what they do…everyone is just amazing!

Next year I hope to be a bit more on-the-ball with MeCAF, I’m lucky and grateful that it went so well for me as I was woefully under-prepared. Sleep or no sleep (this year being the later) I always have fun in Portland and can’t wait to go back!

Cheers!

MAGFest 13

MAGFest has once again come and gone, and my official start to the new year can begin. As I’ve said in past years, MAGFest means so much to me, my year almost can’t even get underway until I’ve attended. It’s the creative re-charging of the batteries for the rest of the year. So many connections, ideas, and inspirations are had and shared at MAG that it really does set my path for the next 11 months. It’s where Beyond Mode 7 came from, and it’s where some future projects will be coming from. Let us begin taking a look at this year’s show, shall we?

FRIENDS

I have a lot of friends I only see every year at MAGFest. I make new ones every year as well. It would almost be more appropriate to call them my MAGFamily. We party, we laugh, we cry, we cheer and boo and just enjoy every single minute of time we have with one another. This year was no different.

A lot of my friends at MAGFest are extremely creative people, and do everything from artwork to podcasts to improv comedy. I’m going to quickly take a look at a few of the major players!

SML Podcast

The SML Podcast (Someone Might Listen) is hosted by my long time MAGFest and beyond friend JoeCam. His co-hosts are Kris Huber and Pappy. They focus on gaming news and discussion and just having a light, hanging out with friends feel to their show. It’s guest list includes everything from indie game developers and composers to major players like Harmonix and King of the Nerds winner Kayla LaFrance. Joe is one of a few remaining Lumberjacks who have been to every single MAGFest, Kris is a drummer and all-around awesome musician and Pappy reviews movies over at Drunk Monkeys!

I created the logo art for the show and you can see a sneak peak of the new art above!

Fat Gatby

Fat Gatsby is a variety postcast network comprised mainly of members of the now closed X-Strike Studios. Tim, Juese, Dave and Ben talk about all manner or things from comics to game culture to improv comedy! It’s always got a humorous twist and is highly entertaining, I can’t recommend it higher!

These Guys are Sick!

Made up of X-Strike members, new faces and the amazing ProJared this intrepid group of improv-comedy performers have grown in popularity exponentially since they burst onto the MAGFest scene a few years ago. They do a full 2 hour “Whose-Line” style show with a video game themed twist! They’re quick, witty, atheletic even! If you get the chance to see them live, do it…you’ll laugh till you hurt!

The whole crew!

ProJared giving his best performance!

8BitMaximo

Max is one of those cartoonists that I wonder when he finds time to sleep. He’s involved in so many projects, he’s always got new art and it’s always getting even better and more amazing! This MAGFest he had no less than 5 brand new poster designs for sale as well as his work on SWD Tech’s “Pixel Noir” which I’ll talk more about later! Support this dude, he’s simply the best!

Kevin Bolk

K-Bo is just such a lovable human being. Not only does he create the cutest parody comics and commissions, he’s got a HUGE heart and spreads joy from behind his table like no one else. He also contributed to Beyond Mode 7 and it was nice to finally be able to deliver his contributor copies of the book!

Hex Martinez

Hex hasn’t updated his FB art page in a while, as he recently got hired by Apple! Still, his work is super dope and I think you should all enjoy it! He’s a really rad guy!

MUSIC

Honestly, I didn’t get to as much music this year as last, I was spending way too much time hanging with my friends and making connections. I did still however make it to two key concerts, one great discussion panel with Virt and met a new band for whom I may be doing some art for! Let’s commence the rock!

Machinae Supremacy

I am new to Machinae. Unlike Kris Huber, who’s been listening to the Swedish metal band since High School, I only became aware of their awesome this past summer when Kyle JCRB of Arecibo Radio held a listening party for their new album “Phantom Shadow.” I’m glad I attended that one because I’ve been hooked ever since! A solid mix of modern heavy metal, power metal and alternative rock with chiptunes, they’re a perfect fit for MAGFest and help bring a fresh, non-gaming flavor to the show.

The selection they played in their set was fantastic, many of my favorites were in there! I had some issues with the balancing however, and thought the guitars were way to loud, drowning out the vocals at times. Drums were almost non-existent. Still, my ears were happily ringing days after the show and I hope they come back for another MAGFest!

The Lonely Rolling Stars

The Lonely Rolling Stars took the stage this year with a slightly new lineup. Stemage finally decided he was in too many bands and had too many projects, so he gracefully bowed out after Carnivortex. Enter MEGA BEARDO! He’s been a stellar addition and adds some great stage presence, awesome guitar playing and Vocal power to the team! They played several new songs at MAGFest and in discussions at Virt’s panel the next day, Ailsean admitted that the young drummer Chuck “finbeard” Simpson had already finished his recording for the new album! Unfortunately the old men of the group have some catching up to do, but soon…very soon. He provided a consolation hug and hurried on his way to bug the equally busy Jake Kauffman.

Did I mention that the composer for Katamari Damacy, and the song for whom the band is named, made a special appearance on-stage at the end of their set? Very special thing…you really had to be there!

Jake “Virt” Kauffman

(Brendan Becker aka Inverse Phase crashing Virt’s panel…he’s in the red!)

SPEAKING of Jake, his panel was a fantastic boost to my morale! He discussed his recent work on projects from Double Dragon Neon to Duck Tales Remastered and Shovel Knight to his experience coming up as a new, ambitious, self-taught musician. He referenced his on-going battle with depression and self-doubt and how his family, friends and the amazing companies he’s been able to work with have given him all the strength he needs to continue to create amazing music. Having known Jake in some capacity for over a decade now, it’s always inspiring to hear him talk about his work ethic and the things that keep him going!

Do A Barrel Roll

A new-er band to the VGM scene, their first album “Thunderous Crash” came out in 2011, and last year featured “Boss Rush.” Boss Rush is an important album for them as it introduces the band members (Dani Kong – drums, percussion, Ayalisse – electric and acoustic violin, Meta Man – trumpet, keyboards, Prof. Sequoia – keyboards, samples, Zero Nimbus – guitars, arrangement, Axe Deadeye – guitars, Rado – guitars, Photo-Man – bass guitar) as heroes in their own game-inspired multiverse. Their new album, which I am in discussions with to illustrate, will introduce their full musical narrative! Prepare first for a short Pokemon EP to tide you over, which I also might have an artistic hand in. I’m very excited to work with these guys, they’ve got energy to spare!

NEW FACES

Sarah Lulu Ding

Working with Maximo this year was the lovely Sarah! She shared the table with him and had her own amazing digital paintings with her, game characters, anime, pretty soldier sailor moon! Her bright colors and vibrancy was as attractive as her attention to detail and figure work! She and Max made a great team and I can’t wait to see more of her work in the future!

SWD Tech Games/PixelNoir

It was my great pleasure to meet Len Stewart of SWD Tech Games, an indie developer working on a superb classic Noir-inspired, top-down pixel animated RPG called Pixel Noir. Featuring art designs by Maximo, Music by Kunal Majmudar and Len’s great creative leadership, (among many other great team members) Pixel Noir is on it’s way to success! Their first Kickstarter came up a bit short, but they’re gearing up for a new one and you can bet they’ll pick themselves up and deliver one of the best indie games of the year!

Richard Durham

Another new face not to the scene, and probably not new to the vendor hall either, but this year was the first year I had the pleasure of playing an original card game created by Richard Durham called Zomboree! In the X-Strike party room we took on the hoards as our group tried to survive 7 days until rescue by the military…however the infected quickly took control of the game and over took what was left of us. It was incredibly fun and very challenging. You can grab a copy of it and his other game, a detective misdirection game called Dirty Little Secrets at DriveThru Cards

Ode

“Magic is fading, and the world is changing. Some, however, still fight for the Old Ways.
These are the kinds of heroes that live on.
This is their Ode.”

Ode is a fantasy comic by Annie Stoll & Tim Ferrara. The beautiful semi-abstract painted style with anime influences and fluid character designs by Annie and the smart, fantastical writing by Tim pulled me into their booth at MAGFest’s marketplace. Sadly they were out of chapter 2 of the print edition, but like Citadel, they are currently on the third Chapter and it’s available in it’s entirety online. I still highly recommend getting a hard copy however, the books looked beautiful!

Smooth McGroove

I got to meet Smooth McGroove! He signed my 3DS right next to the AVGN’s signature from last year! He’s such a nice guy and his panel was very laid back and fun!

COSPLAY

I was so involved with seeing friends and hanging out this year, making connections and the like, I didn’t get my camera out for too many cosplayers. The few that did catch my eye however, I’ll feature below. Enjoy!

Full-on Katamari goodness!

These two were already posed so I snapped a quick one!

Ambitious MegaMan costumer was ambitious!

He ain’t afraid of no ghosts!

My favorite of the show, a super well done, simple and cute Paula from Earthbound!

Closing Thoughts

I made more positive connections at MAGFest 13 than I’ve made in a long time. I caught up on old friendships, made new ones, and even lined myself to continue contributing artistically to the community I love! I learned from some heroes, laughed with my favorite shows live, rocked out, and re-invigorated myself for 2015! While I’m sad it’s already over, I’m very excited about the projects I have already lined up for this year and the ones to come! Stay tuned!

Here’s a few more remaining pictures from the show!

Pano over the Balcony of the Gaylord National Harbor Hotel from the X-Strike party room…one last time!

Some guerrilla advertising for Beyond Mode 7! I sold around 7-10…thanks all who bought one!!!

Game music orchestra set up in the main hallway outside the convention center!

Hot Pepper Gaming LIVE! I laughed till I felt the burn!

MAGSwag! Finally got that scarf I’ve been wanting since last year!

Kickstarter Illustration – Samus V Ridley

Howdy everybody!

With the holidays approaching, I opted to not post a comic page yesterday as I’m still designing this years Holiday Card! That will post next week on Christmas, also in lieu of a Citadel page. In the mean-while, here’s a bonus Kickstarter post this week; one of the 4 full size commissions I completed for our highest level backers!

This one was sent all the way out to Scotland, but unfortunately came back and will be being re-sent, but the opportunity was my being able to re-scan the artwork (the original file was lost.) and present it here!

Come back Thursday and Saturday for more sketch cards and next week for my annual holiday greeting card design! (I may make the designs available online in the future!)

Portland Comics Expo 2014 Report

Rick Lowell of Portland, Maine’s Casablanca Comics is no stranger to putting on conventions. He’s had 6 straight years of a successful spring indie comics show called MeCAF. So with those experiences at his back, he launched this year a more mainstream show called Portland Comics Expo. With convention season wrapping up and a whole half a year separated from MeCAF, the timing seemed pretty good for one last hurrah for comics in Portland before the long, cold winter sets in. Unfortunately for us vendors/artists and Rick, the public interest in the show did not seem to match our enthusiasm. Let’s discuss why that might be!

Unlike the abject failure that was RockCon earlier in the year, I place no blame on the organizers of the show for it being a slow day. Rick is a great host and everything about the set up and organization of the program went as smoothly as any MeCAF I’ve been to. He kept his advertising focus on the artists attending, and unlike GraniteCon there was no extreme distraction in the form of a bunch of b-list TV show actors from a popular show. So why was it so slow?

I think this boils down to two factors: Convention fatigue and the mysterious x-factor. There are a LOT of conventions out there, more every year. I’m beginning to suspect that con-goers have too many options right now and their time and money are being spread a bit thin. The other factor, is an unknown quantity. Vermont ComicCon, which took place the same weekend as Portland Comic Con, and run by the organizers of the failed RockCon was an enormous success, according to other cartoonist friends of mine who tabled there. What was the difference? Why was that show successful while the Portland show was mostly flat? There are far too many factors that could effect the answer to that question, and it’s just the nature of business in a given year to have ups and downs.

All that said, I did make back my cost of tabling, but not much else. I did still have a great time and I also met some amazing new cartoonists. I’ll take some time now to talk about them!

Amanda Kahl is the self publishing power behind a fine fantasy epic called Age of Night.

After a brief 70’s dance-off with my table-mate Matt Young I wandered over to join the conversation and discover what this SCAD grad’s work was all about. The art style is definitely very well fit for the genre, a tight mix of realistic character designs, attention to details in textures and dense, dark contrasts to set a good mood for a bar fight!

I’m a few chapters in already and love the ramshackle group of adventurers she has coming together, full of witty con artists, innocent mages and failed attempts at debauchery! I’m excited to see where the story and this rag-tag crew goes!

Andrew R MacLean is a Mass-based cartoonist who’s Head Lopper was the most interesting comic premise I saw at the show. A tongue-in-cheek adventure about swords and monsters…and a talking severed head. Very cool, very bold, sharply illustrated with tight character designs and crisp, simple, well placed lines that express to the n’th degree! Definitely a fun romp of a comic and very polished work! Check out his blog too, he’s been doing some great Alien related sketching this month!

Caught up briefly with Christina Siravo who is a staple at MeCAF. She approaches fantasy art with a child-like wonder and beauty. Her designs are flush with vibrant color and subtle lines. She’s always got a smile on her face and one of the nicest tables you’ll happen across at any show!

I love visiting Portland, it’s a fantastic city with a lot of great comics fans. I definitely hope MeCAF continues to be a successful show and perhaps next year Portland Comic Expo, with a little tweaking, can be just as great!

GraniteCon 2014 Report

GraniteCon 2014 saw a return to the Radisson Expo Center in Manchester, NH for Jesse and I, and after last year’s GraniteCon being our best show of the year, we had high hopes and expectations! Let’s see what was good and bad about this year’s show (what we playfully dubbed “The Con of Thrones”) and also look at the friends and new artists I met along the way!

Overview

The Theme this year was made known months in advance of the actual con. This year GraniteCon managed to land 5 guest actors from the very popular HBO series “Game of Thrones.” Now, while I’ve read all 5 “Song of Ice and Fire” books and DO enjoy the show, the focus on this element of the convention clearly had an impact on other aspects of the show. I could feel attendance was up this year, it was their second year being a 2-day show and people felt a bit more used to the format, but because of the sudden injection of popular, non-comics media to the show, many of those new attendees were there “just for the celebrities.” and way way less for the actual comics artists for which the show is named.

There was an air of indifference shown to the artists this year, more like we were just there to amuse folks until the next Game of Thrones panel was loudly announced over the convention PA. There were influxes of people in-between the events, and there were times of very heavy activity on the show floor proper, but the gaps of just dead sales with little to no people walking around the artists tables was maddening and long. Especially on Sunday afternoon when one usually expects a bump in sales as people look to unload and make their choices.

I heard from many, many artists that sales were way down this year and while it’s easy to blame the Game of Thrones theme or the length of the show, or even the layout (which was no different than the previous years layout really, actually I liked the space we had between lanes much more this year!) But it was just a plain down year at GraniteCon for us, the artists, the backbone of said cons.

I basically broke even, which is more than I could ask for usually. To conclude, I’m not saying GraniteCon is entirely at fault for the sluggish sales, there are plenty of X-factors here that are not easily quantifiable. I plan to take the pro-active route and shaking up my table presence for the next convention I do and make the changes I can to better represent myself and my art to the convention-going public. I hope GraniteCon works hard to do the same for us artists.

Beyond Mode 7

Beyond Mode 7 the SNES themed comics and art anthology Jesse and I have been working on for the better part of 2 years now. GraniteCon was our public premier for the book and we sold…1 copy! I suppose a convention like MAGFest is much more suited to a game-themed book such as ours, but the reception to game based art and comics was much stronger over all at the prior year’s GraniteCon.

Thanks to our one purchaser, a fine Legend of Zelda: Link Between Worlds cosplayer!

Artists

Now that all the negativity is out of the way, let’s talk about some of the awesome artists I meet every year at the show, and the new faces I got introduced to, and their amazing art of course!

Amanda Dufresne

I actually met Amanda very recently at the unfortunately totally-bust RockCon in Salem, NH. A New Hampshire Native, she combines wicked fast ballpoint pen on paper skills with vibrant splashes of color! Focusing on superheros and a HUGE Legend of Zelda fan, keep an eye on her and her art, definitely suitable for the frames she sells it in!

Brandon Barrows

Brandon was back again for yet another GCon, loaded up with his great self published comics and various published writing such as articles in Heavy Metal! Check out  Jack Hammer, for some superhero, detective noir mix action!

Blair Shedd

Blair is another long-time Granite Con tabler. You probably know him from his awesome Dr. Who art on the IDW line (before the licence moved elsewhere) as well as his amazing representational illustration work and his self published The RAPTOR superhero comic. Keep an eye on him in 2014, big things are happening for Blair very soon and it all promises to be very awesome!

Rare Earth Comics/Ian Ally-Seals/Carl Mefferd

Rare Earth Comics is the brain child of writer Ian Ally-Seals and features the art of fellow CCS graduate Carl Mefferd on their leading title Doctor Atlantis! They were seated directly across from us this year and sure had a great bunch of stuff to show off!

Chris Campana

Chris was a new face for me at GraniteCon. Friendly and quick with a joke, his comic First World is RIGHT down my alley, and definitely something to look towards as inspiration for my own Fantasy comic!

Cosplay

I don’t normally talk about cosplay much on my wrap up, but Granite Con’s cosplay seemed to even have a theme this year…BIG! Here’s a few shots I managed to take real quick!

Wreck It Ralph meets Enormous 10-foot creepy clown!

The Thing stopped by to say hi to Wolverine!

See that ENORMOUS white and green robot thing towering over everything else? Crazy!

The kids-con area even had the candy car!

It’s not GraniteCon without the Tardis randomly appearing!

Wrap-Up

Despite being a down year, and hearing a lot of complaints from other artists, I still have a lot of fun every year at Granite Con. Manchester is easy to drive to, the hotel is right off the highway, and parking is a sinch! I also love the folks that table and typically the crowd that attends. I don’t know if I’ll do GraniteCon again next year or not, it’s obviously quite a ways off, but we’ll see what happens!

Maybe next year I’ll do MAGFest 9.5 instead…if they do another fall show? (Tee-shirt representin’!)

My next convention is going to be Portland Comics Expo (run by the MeCAF guys!) on October 26th so come on out to the sea-coast and check out what’s new at RKDIA Comics!

Beyond all expectations

This week Beyond Mode 7 officially became a reality! I picked up the print run and boy do these things look snazzy! The quality is superb and I cannot wait to start sharing these things with all our backers, and then very soon with everyone else!

Rewards posters have also been printed, including a bunch of Blair Shedd’s amazing Legend of Zelda print and the bookmarks are printed, laminated and just need to be trimmed down to size. A lot of this work I’ve been able to do by-hand on some great machinery and it’s really made for a personally rewarding experience.

Citadel is still unfortunately on indefinite hold as I still have to wrap up sketch cards and rewards commissions, but I do still plan on having Chapter 2 ready to go in-print for GraniteCon (Where BM7 will also premier!)

Finally, Jesse and my application for MAGFest 13 this coming January is in! We hope to get a table this year again and bring BM7 directly to the fans who inspired the book to begin with! So exciting!

-RD

Beyond Mode 7 Game Start!

It’s been exactly a month since my last update! Time sure is flying this year.

A lot has happened in the time has passed, most of it involving Beyond Mode 7.

The book is complete, and the digital version is out to all the Kickstarter backers. Jesse and I still have not decided on whether to make this version available after the KS rewards are fulfilled, but we will certainly let y’all know once we do reach a decision!

The final print version PDF went to the printers TODAY, we hope to have a proof approved by Wednesday next week!

The Posters being printed as backer rewards are super cool, so much of the art and exclusives translated very well to larger-size print. IF you didn’t get in on the project’s KS, and want to grab any of the posters, I would encourage you to contact the contributing artist or Jesse and myself about perhaps ordering one.

One poster in particular, Blair Shedd’s exclusive Stretch-Goal Legend of Zelda: ALttP reward poster IS going to be available for purchase from Jesse and I and Blair himself at the many, many conventions the 3 of us do. You can grab a copy from us there!

IF you’re native to New England, plan on attending GraniteCon the weekend of September 13-14th as Beyond Mode 7 will be premiering at the show publicly for the first time! We’ll also have plenty of Blair’s posters, and many other goodies with us for purchase, along with all our regular comics, art, prints, and sketch cards!

Citadel Chapter 3 final draft writing is underway and look for the story to continue in the final week of this month, here at RKDIA Comics!

Cheers!

A return to Productivity

Hey all,

Once again, apologies for the radio silence here at RKDIA Comics, we’re in pre-press phase for Beyond Mode 7 and almost ready to get the books made! Very soon after that, there will be a whole lot of new art to share as Jesse and I begin creating Sketch cards and commissions for all the backers who pledged at those levels! I will be putting up here every single piece I do for the backers, so Sketch Card Thursdays will return soon!

Shortly after that, Citadel will return every Tuesday and also stay tuned for a couple announcements about some new comics coming to the site!

Lots going on in the background here, can’t wait to share it all with you!

-RD

Goals Reached!

Hey everyone, it’s been a very long time since I last did a front-page post on the site! I’ve been very very busy organizing and running the Beyond Mode 7 Kickstarter!

Funding is now over and we reached highly unexpected levels of success with the campaign! While I would love to get back to drawing and posting Citadel pages, now my attention must be focused on fulfilling all of the KickStarter rewards! We’re going to have a lot of books leftover, so if you want a copy, come see Jesse and I at our two remaining shows this year: GraniteCon and MAGFest for New Years 2015!

I expect to start Citadel Chapter 3 some time in July. Thanks for your patience!

Thanks,
-RD
