Beyond Mode 7: Deadline Approaches!

This update has been a long time coming! It’s time to officially get excited about Beyond Mode 7 as the final art submission deadline is just a mere 2 weeks away! To whet all those video game art loving appetites out there, today I’m going to share a few nibbles of some of what has already come in from our STILL GROWING list of contributors!

First off, I’d like to announce that the book will officially launch at MeCAF 2014, in Portland Maine on May 18th! Jesse and I were accepted for the sixth year in a row to table at this amazing, growing and evolving indie comics show! It’s got a great history of solid attendance and being great for the whole family, exactly the intended audience for the anthology.

Second, if you missed any of my Post-MAGFest Reports (read them here and here) then I’ll once again announce the addition of the amazing Kevin Bolk, 8BitMaximo and Hex Martinez to the Anthology roster! Each brings something unique and powerful to the table and we’re overjoyed to have them on board! Hit those links up and check out their work!

Now, for the newcomers to Beyond Mode 7, let me introduce the anthology real quick: The brain child of my table mate and fellow ink-slinger Jesse Durona (artist behind the popular Despondent Mega Man comics) Beyond Mode 7 came to be after MAGFest 11 in January of 2013. The book will be a full-color, 6×9″, perfect-bound homage to all things Super Nintendo.

With more contributing artists than the system had Bits to work with, it will cover a broad spectrum of experiences, games and memories from arguably the 90’s greatest video game console and game library. It will feature comics, illustrations, essays, and other works of art all honoring a device that brought interactive art and creativity right into our living rooms every day of our childhood!

Some of the games covered by Beyond Mode 7 include: (Art represented are works-in-progress!)

…and many many more!

As a note to creators still working: The deadline for final art submissions is the end of this month! As of March, Jesse and I will be compiling the artwork together and preparing a Kickstarter for April! Then it’ll be a Super Nintendo Blitz to get as many people contributing to the campaign as possible! We want to put your art in as many hands as possible, so keep and eye out for requests to help spread the word!

Thanks, and game on!

MAGFest Report Part II

For the last 3 years now, MAGFest has been the first convention of the year for Jesse and I. This year we never got off the waiting list for a vendor table, and ended up going to MAG as just attendees, but it was still absolutely worth it! Not only did I get to spend a lot more time with my friends and fellow game nerds, I was able to sit down and hammer out the details of an upcoming collaboration with a fellow artist on a huge album project by the great Mazedude! More details on that a little later on.

Despite all the factors that would seemingly take me away from the comics/illustration side of the show, I did manage to check out a few old favorites, discover some artists for the first time, AND get three more awesome folk on-board for Beyond Mode 7! Let’s get started on the run-down of what caught my artistic eye at MAGFest XII!

Kevin Bolk is a MAGFest staple. He does a ton of shows every year but never misses MAG, not matter how tired and worn out he is from his prolific production and show schedule! He’s a pleasure to talk to and is quick to impart his cartooning knowledge on the young minds that need to know! I grabbed his second and final volume of “It Sucks To Be Weegee!”

Click to buy it!!!! © Kevin Bolk

This popular web comic about the misadventures of the oft-neglected brother of Nintendo’s Famous Plumber comes to a great, but still hilarious conclusion! Kevin has also agreed to submit a comic or illustration (time depending, old or new we know not!) to Beyond Mode 7! Jesse and I are honored to have Kevin on board! Thanks K-Bo!

8Bit Maximo, he’s the nicest Deviant I know! © Maximo V Lorenzo

One of the first artists tables I made sure to stop at was my buddy 8Bit Maximo’s! A fellow comic’s school graduate (he went to Kubert, I to CCS) I’ve been friends with Max for a number of years now. His enthusiasm for games, comics and manga, and his incredible work ethic, have inspired me just as long! He’s got a distinct style with a mix of over-the-top shonen energy and super expressive characters with a hard, high-contrast classic American comics edge puts him in a unique category of creators, I think. He’s also one of the nicest guys I know!

I commissioned from him this year a sweet Aya Brea from Parasite Eve. I was expecting her in her typical leather jacket, tee shirt and jeans as she appears in most of the game, but Max wowed me by drawing her in that super sexy little black dress from the Opera Scene at the start of her adventure! Bravo Max, and thanks a ton buddy!

Max has also decided he’ll try to find time to bang out a piece for Beyond Mode 7! Whatever he decides to do, I’m sure it will bring a lot of excitement and energy to the book!

The Hex himself! © Hector Martinez

Hector “Hex” Martinez is another artist/cartoonist/crazy guy who’s been around the VGM community for a long time, and it was awesome to run into him this year! He too has agreed to whip up something awesome for Beyond Mode 7, and as he is a very experimental cartoonist, who knows what kind of piece we could get! It will totally be worth the wait!

Bill & Ted art by Hex! © Hector Martinez

Hex’s work is pop-culture infused across many mediums. He does traditional pen and ink cartooning, painting, mixed media and collage, digital, comics, tattoo and even art on wood blocks (his latest, most awesome thing!) If you’ve got something that needs a nerdy, hip-hop twist, Hex is your man!

Banner – Save/Continue GOTY

Happy weekend everyone! I was commissioned by my buddy JoeCam to do the banner for the #1 post of Save/Continue’s Game of the Year countdown for 2013! Tomb Raider came out on top with 4 #1 votes, so she’s the focus of the piece!

MAGFest XII Report

MAGFest XII was a bit different for me this year. It was definitely one of the best MAGFests yet, however Jesse and I did not table, and it changed the way I got to experience the best Video Game festival on the East Coast! As a result, this post is going to be different from past-years MAGFest reports.

Let us start at the beginning!

MAGFest was once again held in the Gaylord National Harbor Hotel and Resort. This is the show’s third year at this immensely huge hotel and convention center. The Gaylord has been a gracious host all 3 years and continues to work very well with attendees and MAGFest alike to provide the best experience possible for everyone! I hope they continue to let MAGFest happen there every January!

My very first order of business was dropping off prints to Knight of the Round the very first band to perform at the show this year on the Main Stage! The prints were of my design for their first album Gaia’s Bane and their newest album Onward Dissension. They rocked faces at their Thursday afternoon set and got the show off to an incredible start!

My second delivery was some prints of Pretty Eight Machine, Inverse Phase aka Brendan Becker’s 8-bit rearrangement of NIN’s Pretty Hate Machine. Brendan did a panel on how he creates his music through a technique called Tracking, used by many talented remixers including guys like Mazedude.

After that it was off to check in with the most awesome group of dudes I’ve ever had the pleasure of knowing in the aptly titled Lumberjack Lounge! This is a party room featuring many of MAGFest’s longest-repeat attendees. Hosted by “Biggest Fan” JoeCam and Taras aka “Pappy”, the Lumberjack Lounge has become THE place to be at MAGFest when you’re not rocking out at a concert or taking in a discussion panel. This year featured many, many surprise faces showing up…but we’ll get to that.

Before we knew it it was midnight and time to go to prom. That’s right, MAGProm. Featuring music from first-time MAGFest performers Love Cannon and long-time MAGFest favorites The OneUps, the dancing went on long into the early morning hours! Here’s my photos from the event:

By request, a picture of JoeCam and his date Tina.

Love Cannon came at us with amazing 80s covers, and are working on a VGM tribute album!

The dancing was spontaneous and exciting!

The OneUps returned this year with a shuffled line-up as Mustin left and bass player Moose returned! Also now featuring rapper Lucio as a regular!

The OneUps bring the funk!

After being woken up far too early by a fire alarm on floor 4 of the hotel, Friday began! It was the most packed of the days I attended and while the Street Passing on my Nintendo 3DS didn’t stop all weekend, Friday was the one day that just sort of kept going…with awesome!

After finally getting some time to explore the whole of the con, I checked out the Animators panel featuring a whole mess of famous YouTube animators/satirists/parody film makers including the one and only EgoRaptor! It was not really anything I haven’t heard before about being a creator and getting your work out there, but it was refreshing to hear other, moderately successful people say it and shed some insight on how their paths to popularity were formed. Hopefully one day I can be on such a panel, encouraging all the kids to just get out there and “JUST DO IT!” as EgoRaptor kept saying.

Next up was Video Game Improv! This panel has exploded in size every year, and it’s totally easy to see why. The guys and gals from X-Strike Studios, The Virtual Fools, PBC Productions, ScrewAttack and others have all come together to create a hugely talented cast of characters! The show itself is sort of like “Who’s Line is it Anyway?” just with video game themes and sensibilities…and probably way funnier!

Seriously funny dudes and dudettes!

Next on the Friday agenda…was ROCK.

The Megas have skyrocketed to immense popularity since their debut in 2008. I was introduced to their sound last MAGFest and quickly became absorbed in their message from Dr. Light. They put on a great show again and I was front and center for this one!

They invited all the costumed fans to join them on stage for their finale!

After The Megas signed my tee shirt at their vendor table, I returned to check out This Place Is Haunted! They have a great rock sound and were performing at MAGFest for the 8th time!

Rocked out, it was time to clean up and head back to the Lumberjack Lounge for the themed Lumbergents party! A lot happened and much fun was had, I’ll just leave a bunch of my photos from the event…here.

Gaming and conversation in the Lumberjack Lounge!

Lumbergent Mazedude talks music!

The party got packed!

Artist Hex Martinez and his lady-friend Brittany chats with Devon Riley while X-Strike Studio’s Tim Ekkebus chills in the background!

A Wild Jon St. John appeared! Joking around with Tina.

Jessperk gets classy with D-Lux, dressed as the Abominable Snow Man from SkiFree.

The night was drawing to a close very soon, but not before one last stop off: The MAGFest RAVE/Dance Party!

The Snowman was very insistent on people going to the Rave….

The Rave opened with one of the best performing MC/DJ combos out there: bLiNd and A-Rival! They put a surge of energy into the room that was incredible!

The Snowman dancing his pixel butt off!

DarkeSword from OCRemix was taking in the phat beetz also!

At one point a Tardis made of balloons was crowd-surfed until it came apart!

The second DJ to take the stage was the immensely talented and popular Ben Briggs. Just listen to his music, it’s out of this world quality!

Friday finally ended and Saturday was quickly upon us! I feel like it was almost one day as I didn’t get terribly much sleep between them. Such is life at MAGFest!

I finally dropped some money down in the vendor hall, picking up some nice swag.

After that I ran down to the well hidden Jam Space to check out Kris Huber as he introduced a few tracks from his new MAGFest-Limited album Blademode. If you didn’t get a copy from him at the show, in-person, then that selection of music will never be available again. He can also be heard with Lumberjack JoeCam on the SML Podcast every week! Check them out!

The last order of business on Saturday before settling down at the Lounge for some decompression was to rock out one last time with LonelyRollingStar! Featuring artists Ailsean, Norg, Cubosh and Stemage (who’s names you should know, and be ashamed if not) these long time MAGFest performers from various other bands have collaborated to create a whole new, amazing sound!

Ken “Hat” Crouch joins LRS on his Big Orange Trombone!

Way sooner than anyone ever expects…Sunday arrived and it was time to head home! The trip to and from was mostly safe for Jesse and I, despite some bad weather happening all over the country on both trips! I’ll finish off with just a few more photos and a HUGE THANK YOU to everyone at MAGFest. Fans, friends and staff alike, you all make the show the amazing thing it is and I hope to be able to table next year and contribute further to it’s awesomeness!

Dat’ licence plate.

One of the best costumes at the show; Judge Gabranth!

Trust me, there were plenty of girls cosplaying and leaving little left to imagine, but I thought this cross-playing Marth was by far the cutest lady in costume! Cheers to her!

The best get of the weekend from the vendor hall! Split the cost on this with Jesse, $100! Can’t wait to play!

Yeah. That’s right. James Rolfe the Angry Video Game Nerd signed my 3DS XL literally just as I was leaving the show to come home. Be jealous. *goes to buy a clear case to protect it*

Beyond Mode 7 Update

Happy weekend everybody! It’s been a long while since I made any sort of noise about Jesse DuRona and my forthcoming Super Nintendo themed anthology, but things are really coming together, so here’s an update!

As of now, we’ve collected around 20 pages of finished material from other artists, Jesse and I have an equally large amount of content in-progress and on the way, giving us so far over 50 pages of confirmed art, comics, essays, illustrations and memories of the greatest 16 bit system ever (and this coming from a kid who grew up on Sonic and Sega Genesis!) It’s going to be chock-full of great art, great stories and great testimonials!

As with any anthology, we’ve hit a few road bumps along the way, so far it’s been nothing we couldn’t handle, but the major road block to our main deadline is the fact that Jesse and I are still on the waiting list for a vendor table at MAGFest, where we had hoped to premier the book. Pre-registration for the show proper ends on the 22nd of December, and if we have not heard from the Vendor Hall coordinator by that time, we’ll have to push back the books official convention premier to MeCAF 2014, to which I’ve already applied for a table!

While disappointing in many ways, MAGFest represents the CORE of the audience we hope to get interested in Beyond Mode 7, MeCAF has always been a very well attended convention with a lot of youth, vigor and interest in games, past and present!

That said, we will still be attending MAGFest in January and if we are not tabling as in years past, we will be pushing flyers into people’s hands, letting them know about the anthology! We may even be able to use the show to pursue a Kickstarter Campaign, allowing the book to reach even more people!

Details on the Kickstarter are still pending, we have a lot of work to do to prepare for such a thing and we want the book to be completely finalized before we proceed with a campaign.

Hope all is well and remember that submissions are extended now through the MAGFest registration deadline of the 22nd!

Thanks,
-RD

GraniteCon 2013

GraniteCon 2013 by far was my best convention ever. Table-mate Jesse DuRona would probably agree, this show was awesome to us! I’ll be honest, I heard mixed reviews from a lot of the other tabling artists and such, some were more successful than others, but for me, GraniteCon offered a steady mix of interested parties who often opened their wallets after seeing something they liked!

The Venue was the same, but the location within was very new and different. The con was really showing off just how much it had grown even since last year! The aisles were long, full of variety in terms of talents, styles and offerings, and there was plenty of space. Like any show there were peaks and valleys during the two day event, meal times and popular programming pulled the crowd away sometimes, but the floor was never completely empty, there was always some activity very near by! The hotel staff were cool, friendly and put up with a lot of antics, I’m sure!

Because my table was so busy, I didn’t get too much of an opportunity to check out other cartoonists work this year! I’m a bit bummed by this, but I did hang out with a few familiar faces and grabbed some comics I had been meaning to! I also had some really cool tabling neighbors…so, onto the artists section of the post!

Blair Shedd is a fellow Vermont based cartoonist and really needs no introduction to the folks that come here. He’s done amazing work for IDW’s Dr. Who and his self-published The RAPTOR is some quality, gritty super hero action! I didn’t get to talk with him terribly much at the show, but he looked busy every time I stopped by! Had a good time catching up at the hotel bar after Day 1, can’t wait to see what’s coming from him this fall/winter!

Brandon Barrows hails from Burlington (It was a regular ol’ VT cartoonist meetup at the show!) and is one of the best writers I’ve met since I started doing conventions! He’s published works all over the place from comics to poetry to prose and back again! Brandon also gets to work with some of the coolest artists working today and the matching is frequently perfect! His comics work includes the Detective comic for superhero fans, or maybe vica versa, Jack Hammer, and Voyaga; a homage to 1950’s pulp scifi!

Mathew Dow Smith is a busy guy and he was at GraniteCon in addition to tabling at FantaCon just a few weekends ago! Another Dr.Who artist, catch him while you can!

Sara Richard is at every GraniteCon, she’s awesome and I only got to say hi for 5 seconds before she flew off to fulfill someone’s dreams, but definitely check out her amazing, loopy and painterly work! She did the con badges this year!

I very briefly got to meet Ben Templesmith at the pub after the show! What a guy he is. Personality to spare and some incredible talent! If you’re into creepy gothic styling and award winning writing, dive in!

The wonderful Sue and Everett Soares were at GraniteCon again this year with the freshly printed second volume of Sky Pirates of Valendor! They are good people with big ol’ hearts and a lot of love for comics! Sky Pirates of course is great fun reading too! Hope to see them again very soon!

I first heard about writer Ron Marz’s comic RAVINE from a very excited Dawn Best and since he was at the show I couldn’t resist grabbing a copy! He was super friendly and Stjepan Sejic’s art looks amazing! As a wanna-be fantasy cartoonist, I figure studying the form from a working master is a good place to start!

JK Woodward is seriously one of the funniest guys I’ve met. As another Who artist, it’s almost no surprise. Those guys all have wit to spare! Some of his Star Trek pages were jaw dropping to see in person! He makes drawing complex ships in space seem easy.

Erik Burnham is every kid who grew up in the 80’s friend. He is a talented writer on both TMNT and Ghostbusters! A quiet guy like me, it was a pleasure to meet him and partake in some of his industry wisdom!

Here’s some other cool stuff that was at the show, in picture form!

The Actual Delorean used in Back to the Future III!

All sorts of Piratey goodness! (Or bad-ass-ness, I guess?)

A view of Manchester, NH from our hotel room Saturday night.

And that just about wraps up my experience at GraniteCon 2013! Again, I had a great time and had the most successful show I’ve ever had! Thanks to all the people that make it happen every year and all the great cartoonists who continue to come year after year! See you in 2014!

FantaCon 2013

*UPDATE!!!* Added my few photos and updated some links and spelling errors!

I had the distinct pleasure and honor of tabling this year at the first FantaCon in Albany, NY since 1990 with the legendary ink-slinger Stephen Bissette and a bunch of my Cartoon Studies buddies! We were hosted by colorist extraordinaires Tom Vincent and Kurt Mausert Thanks so much to Tom and Kurt for being our sponsors!

Here’s some pictures from our setting up!

Steve introduces Mark Martin to current CCS student Allison Bannister!

Here’s Steve’s side of the tables, immediately next to him were Ian Richardson and Denis St. John, both great up-and-coming horror illustrators and cartoonists!

Allison, Chris “Radical” Warren, Jesse DuRona and Carl Antonowicz getting ready for action!

Ack! It’s blurry, but here’s my set up with Jesse!

FantaCon is mainly a horror-themed convention, with a smattering of Fantasy and heaps of nostalgia piled on top! I wasn’t expecting as many cartoonists as at other shows, but I was pleasantly surprised by the strong showing of both current and veteran talent! FantaCon has a horror angle and there was so much in the way of movie stars, toy vendors, creepy illustrators, and monster masks to go around! Despite the slightly adult feel to the show, there were plenty of kids about, and sales of my kid-friendly sketch cards and prints were good! I even managed to put a few copies of Citadel into people’s hands, always a good feeling!

The show floor was busy and bustling and there was a lot of room between each aisle. I feel like the spread of talent was very well laid out and there were reasons to go

I only took a few pictures this time around, but I have a full collection of business cards and art I gathered from many talented people, which I will talk about right now! Read on!

I did manage to see one familiar face at the show, and she wasn’t even a local! (I’m from the Albany area originally.) The lovely and hauntingly good cute horror illustrator Kristilyn was there! I’ve met her at several MeCaf’s of years past and her work continues to be bright and cute and just a wee tad horrifying! Hope she did well at the show! You can find her work at her website!

I spent an enormous amount of time drooling over Christian N. St. Pierre’s table. He’s a superb fantasy illustrator who’s worked in comics, as an illustrator for several game companies (tabletop and card games) as well as creator owned endeavors! I bought a print and original pencil piece and I look forward to being inspired by them for years to come!

Katie Lawter had some fantastic painting prints for sale, a mided media affair with some digital finishing, they were very original in style and set a real dark vaudeville mood. She also had hand crafted charms and masks! Definitely worth checking out!

Sturdy Steve Bissette put me on the path of the brush while I was studying at CCS, and is a prime example of why brush is so worth sticking with! His immense attention to detail and use of it’s weight and fluidity is decades in the making and it was a real pleasure to talk with him about a tool I hope to one day master, even partially! Jason’s been on hiatus for a time, but he’s coming back to comics in a big way soon!

Eric Talbot was right across from us in our aisle and I couldn’t help but stare at his table in moments of quiet. His work on TMNT of course is amazing but the new focus on Skullfactory is just plain great! He’s a master of creeping shapes in the shadows and skulls skulls skulls! His boys are also budding artists and I wanna shout out to WT! Thanks for the awesome sketch!

Finally, I spent some time talking to Matthew Dow Smith. I knew he was going to be at the show via fellow Vermont cartoonist Blair Shedd. Like Blair, Matt is a Dr.Who artist for IDW and his dramatic, bold style both opens so much space into a page of comics, then just as easilly closes in on you for an emotional, claustrophobic confrontation. He was super energetic and friendly and I’m very glad to know another fine artist who gets to put The Doctor through so many adventures!

Okay, that about wraps it up for FantaCon 2013! I did this update from my phone, believe it or not, *hand cramps* so if I missed anybody or screwed up a link, I’ll try to fix em’ later in the week! Photos and sketch cards also to come from FantaCon new every Thursday, including some very special creepy ones for all of October!

Thanks again everyone!
